Everyone knows that parenting is a tough job.  In Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family, Paul David Tripp has written about 14 foundations (Calling, Grace, Law, Inability, Identity, Process, Lost, Authority, Foolishness, Character, False Gods, Control, Rest, and Mercy) of parenting children.

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

About the Book

In the midst of folding laundry, coordinating carpool schedules, and breaking up fights, many parents get lost. Feeling pressure to do everything “right” and raise up “good” children, it’s easy to lose sight of our ultimate purpose as parents in the quest for practical tips and guaranteed formulas.

In this life-giving book, Paul Tripp offers parents much more than a to-do list. Instead, he presents us with a big-picture view of God’s plan for us as parents. Outlining fourteen foundational principles centered on the gospel, he shows that we need more than the latest parenting strategy or list of techniques. Rather, we need the rescuing grace of God—grace that has the power to shape how we view everything we do as parents.  Freed from the burden of trying to manufacture life-change in our children’s hearts, we can embrace a grand perspective of parenting overflowing with vision, purpose, and joy.

My opinion

While I was reading the book, I could relate to many situations that were given as examples.  There were a couple of times I had to do a double take because we had just gone through something that was described nearly to a T in this book.  I was reminded that I needed God’s grace just as much as my children and husband do.  We get so caught up in the ways of the world when we need to stand apart from the world.  As parents we need set an example for our children and point them to the truth.  Our children were given to us from God and we were called by Him to raise them.  This book points us to the truth!  Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family is a great read and a wonderful addition to my bookshelf!
