Psalm 1

Psalm 1 {ESV}

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

{Review} Can Do Cubes

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

My family and I had the pleasure of reviewing Can Do Cubes by jollyliteracy.com.  Earlier in the week we also had the pleasure of reviewing their phonics and grammar programs called Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar.  You can find the review here.

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

In the package from jollyliteracy.com (just2ducks  LLC)  we received the Can Do Cubes, Teacher’s Guide and Template Book on CD, ‘Teaching, learning and ‘sounding out’ with Debbie Hepplewhite on DVD, Debbie Hepplewhite’s simple and complex alphabetic codes overview chart, At-a-glance Word Charts, and two spiral books by Debbie Hepplewhite.

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

The Can Do Cubes are wood blocks that have different letter sounds on every side of the block.  Can Do Cubes can be used with Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar, used as a supplement with any reading or spelling curriculum, or be used on their own.  They can be used in a home, school, or therapy setting.  Peanut and I used them when doing lessons from Jolly Phonics Student Book 1.  We practiced the letter sounds and worked on blending using the cubes.  The picture below is Peanut using the cubes when working on blending the sounds of s, i, and t together to form the word sit.

IMG_0179

In the box that everything comes in the cubes are stored on two trays (Stage One and Stage Two).  They are organized by sounds that you are working on.  If the blocks get mixed up you can quickly return them to the correct tray in the box.  It is a bit snug when everything is in the box however if you store the DVD, CD, and other extras outside of the box, it is a perfect size for the two trays of Can Do Cubes.

The Teacher’s Guide along with the student pages are available on CD.  There are four workbooks with teacher information as well as student pages.  I love being able to print off pages, especially student pages, as I need them.  If you are like me and like having print copies of teacher’s manuals/guides  it is easy enough to print and bind the guide.

‘Teaching, learning and ‘sounding out’ with Debbie Hepplewhite on DVD has six videos as well as extras available on the disc.

The six videos on the DVD are:

  • An Introduction to Can Do Education Limited and CDE Can Do Cubes for English Grammar
  • Teaching with Can Do Cubes: a demonstration from Debbie and Freddie
  • Debbie Hepplewhite ‘Sounds Out’ The Simple Alphabetic Code
  • An Introduction to Synthetic Phonics by Debbie Hepplewhite
  • Debbie Hepplewhite’s Synthetic Phonics for Can Do Cubes Teaching and Learning 1 (and Stage One – the simple Alphabetic Code)
  • Debbie Hepplewhite’s Synthetic Phonics for Can Do Cubes Teaching and Learning 2 (and Stage Two – the complex Alphabetic Code)

The extras include PDF copies of all booklets mentioned and they are:

  • Can Do Grammar for Schools Booklet (UK Schools)
  • Can Do Grammar Guide Booklet
  • Synthetic Phonics Booklet
  • Synthetic Phonics Charts

The Debbie Hepplewhite’s simple and complex alphabetic codes overview chart and At-a-glance Word Charts are poster sized charts.  They are printed on quality paper.  While having the charts included in my set are nice to have available, I do not have the wall space to hang them.  Being able to print the At-a-glance Word Chart from a PDF file that is included on the DVD allows me to print them on standard size printer paper and laminate for durability.  I can keep them readily available in a folder for my children and not try to find space to hang them in the house.

IMG_0180

The two spiral books in the Can Do Cubes box are ‘Can Do Cubes for Systematic Synthetic Phonics’ by Debbie Hepplewhite.  The first book is ‘Home Edition – Stage One: the simple alphabetic code’ and the second books is ‘STAGE TWO Enjoying synthetic phonics: a multisensory approach’.  Both books contain information on how to teach using synthetic phonics and some activity suggestions to do with children.

As a mom I love the versatility of the Can Do Cubes and the fact that I am not limited to using them one way or with one program.  We can continuing using them whether we are using them with a program or by themselves!  These cubes will be put to great use over the next few years as I have 5 kids from an emerging reader all the way down to an almost three year old!

{Review} Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

Peanut and I had the pleasure of reviewing Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar by jollyliteracy.com.  Jollyliteracy.com’s parent company is just2ducks  LLC.  We were sent Jolly Phonics Teacher’s Book in print letters, Jolly Phonics Student Book 1, 2 and 3, Jolly Grammar 1 Teacher’s Book in print letters, Jolly Grammar 1 Student Book, and Jolly Songs in print letters.

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

In the Teacher’s Book for Jolly Phonics there are introduction pages and the teacher pages for Jolly Phonics Student Books 1, 2, and 3.  Every section, including the introduction pages, has a color coded edge, which I love!  The edges are color coded to match the book…Red for Student Book 1, Blue for Student Book 2, and Green for Student Book 3.   Then in the upper corners of the book it will tell you exactly which page in the student book the lesson is for.  For example:  Student Book 1: Page 17.  It is very easy to find the page that you need in the Teacher’s Book!!  Everything is laid out for me as a teacher and every lesson includes a copy of the student page that is being taught.  I love that multiple student books are included in one teacher’s guide!

I decided to start Peanut off in Jolly Phonics Student Book 1 and the lessons are the perfect length for her.  She has done the lessons with a smile on her face and asks to do more when we are done.  Her lessons take no more than 15 minutes a day and she is introduced to a different letter sound every day.  At first I thought it would be too much for her working on a different sound each day but she has not had a problem.  She has been reviewing their sounds, working on blending, and practicing letter formation.  She starts off the lesson by reviewing previous sounds she has learned earlier in the book.  She is then introduced to the new sound through a story.  There is a story provided for me to read to her or I can use one of my choice.  I read the story that is provided in the Teacher’s Book.  Then there parts to the lesson: Action, Formation, Blending, Sounding, Word Bank, Dictation, and Further Ideas.  She then completes the lesson page in the Student Book which includes working on her handwriting and a few additional activities.  She even enjoys that she has a picture that she can color.

Jolly Phonics Student Books 2 and 3 and Jolly Grammar 1 are set up similar to Jolly Phonics Student Book 1. The Teacher Book for Jolly Grammar 1 is set up like it is for Jolly Phonics Teacher’s Book.  There is still one lesson per page for all student books and the student continues building on what they have learned in the prior lessons.  The short lessons are perfect for younger children!   All of the student books the pages are bright and colorful.  Don’t let this discourage you if you have a child that is easily distracted because Peanut is one who is easily distracted and has a short attention span and she did wonderful throughout the review!  I am going to continue Jolly Phonics Book 1 with Peanut since she is loving it and asking for more!

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar Review

Jolly Songs in print letters is a song book that has a cd of all 47 songs included. These songs have been created to help children learn and remember letter sounds by singing them to well known tunes such as ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands’, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’, ‘Old MacDonald’ and many more!  The songs are catchy and easy to learn.  In the back of the song book there are a couple pages of extra games and activities that can be done with your students.  Even younger children will enjoy listening to these songs.

{Review} FamilyChristian.com website review plus a giveaway!!

Recently, I had the opportunity to review FamilyChristian.com with a $25 certificate.  FamilyChristian.com has a wide selection of items from gifts, décor and apparel to books, Bibles and much more!  They even sell things for churches and various ministries.  If you are looking for something faith based please check out FamilyChristian.com or one of their local stores!

When looking at what to spend my $25 on I took a look at the Bibles that FamilyChristian.com carries.  I have been looking for a new Bible for a while and haven’t found anything that was what I was looking for.  I was interested in a journaling Bible but nothing stood out in the Bible translations that I preferred until I came across the ESV Journaling Bible: Interleaved Edition w/ strap – Brown Leather at FamilyChristian.com!  It has a FULL blank page next to every page of Bible text!!!  Most of the other journaling Bibles only have extra wide margins and that wasn’t enough space for me!  The other problem that I was running into was the majority of the journaling Bibles had lined margins, which I didn’t want.  Sadly, this Bible did not go into my cart due to the cost ($129.99) but it was added to my wishlist!

I love to read and there is a large selection of books to choose from at FamilyChristian.com!  You will see all of the books that are sold in stores as well as at FamilyChristian.com.  There is not a filter to filter out the items that are sold at stores only so if you do not have a store close by you, you will see many products that are sold in stores only.  Here is what I finally decided on buying with my $25.  Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson and The Amish Nanny by Leslie Gould and Mindy Starns Clark.  Dee Henderson is one of my favorite authors and this is one of her newest books and The Amish Nanny is the second book in a series called ‘The Women of Lancaster County Series #2’.  Since I enjoyed book one I decided to go ahead and get the second book.  I am excited to receive them!

FamilyChristian

Something that I learned about FamilyChristian.com is that in late 2012 they changed from a for profit company over to a non-profit ministry!  Here is information on their mission and calling!  All purchases help support children and families in need in U.S. as well as around the world.  Additionally, while checking out you are given the opportunity to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar or choose an amount of your choice to be donated to their mission!

{Review} Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids

Beginner Spanish Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids Review

Are you looking for a fun and engaging Spanish program?  My family had the pleasure of reviewing the Starter Set 1 by Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids.

Beginner Spanish Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids ReviewMy family received:

  • DVD with videos for Levels 1-3
  • Three Parent-Teacher Guides
  • Flashcards and Card Games for Levels 1 to 3
  • Workbooks for Levels 1-3
  • Stickers for Levels 1-3
  • Go Squish Card Game

Flight 101: Basketballs Aren’t for Breakfast starts off in the morning with three boys and their mom getting ready for breakfast.  Then you follow the family throughout their day.  You watch segments of the video during every lesson and will watch the segments multiple times for the repetition.  The kids and I accidently watched the entire video for Level 1 the first time we played it.  We were enjoying it so much that I completely forgot about having to stop the video at the time marker for lesson 1.  (There is no marker on the DVD to let you know to stop the video).  At the conclusion of the video it left the girls and I wanting to watch more.

The Guide for Teachers and Parents has everything laid out for you!  It makes it easy for those who have had no prior knowledge of the Spanish language.  There are vocabulary word banks in the guide that include the English translation  of the words.  During every lesson you will watch either a portion of or the entire segment of the video and then there a few activities, including games, to do.  You will repeat the lessons multiple times and it is very flexible in fitting the needs of your family.  You can complete this program at the pace that works best for your family!

The flash cards are colored coded by level.  Blue for level 1, green for level 2, and red for level 3.  There is a set of picture cards, word cards, and word bank cards.  The word cards are all in Spanish and they match the picture cards.  Every picture card is numbered so you can quickly glance at the word bank cards for the answer.  The cards are used in the Go Squish Card Game and other activities that are found in the teacher’s guide.  They are open ended so you can design your own game or activity as well.

All of the very bright and colorful pages of the student workbooks are printed on quality paper.  The workbooks are designed for upper elementary students.  In the workbooks there are various activities to be completed by the students.  If you have younger students you can complete the workbook together.  The activities include a word search, a cross word, decoding words, and answering questions.  If needed, the answers are provided in the back of the book.

IMG_0126

Sheets of stickers with vocabulary words are provided to be placed around the house to aid in helping the students remember the vocabulary that they have learned.  I didn’t want to encourage my kids to stick stickers on things around the house so Sweet Pea and I brainstormed on how we could use them.  Sweet Pea decided to place the stickers on colored card stock and cut around the edges.  As you can see in the photo below she added a design to the edges while she was cutting them out.

IMG_0125
The Go Squish card game is similar to ‘Go Fish’.  The game is designed for 2-4 four players but with additional cards (either using the cards from the other levels or buying an additional set of cards) you can play with more children.  It is suggested to have a second set of cards if you have non readers playing so you will have two sets of the picture cards.  The object of the game is to get enough miles for Squisher to go visit his friend through matching the pairs together.

I think this beginner Spanish set is a great way to introduce Spanish to children!  It is designed to teach to the various learning styles and it keeps the kids engaged.  The girls want to continue using Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids along with the program that they have been using.
