{Review} Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree by Star Toaster

Orphs of the Woodlands at Tanglegate ReviewSweet Pea has been enjoying Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree by Star Toaster.  Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree is an app for an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 8.4 or later.  We used an iPad for the review.

Orphs of the Woodlands at Tanglegate ReviewOnce the app was downloaded from the iTunes store the set up was a breeze and it didn’t take long to get it going.

Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree is an interactive program.  When you first open the app you will be brought to the map of the land.  To enter Tangletree you must click on the Tangletree tree, which is on the left side.  Your student is brought to the last spot in the book that they were at.  From there they can either continue reading the book or go anywhere else Tangletree.

At the top of the screen it will show who is logged in, where you are at in Tangletree, and can click on the menu.   At the bottom you see the goal your student is working towards and how many stars has been earned and needs to complete the next goal.  In Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree, Sweet Pea is earning stars to buy things such as flour, water, clothes, dishes, etc for the orphans who live there.  Below the goal there are buttons to go to the map, book, Stumptown, and the tree to view the orphanage goals.

You can add additional users or change users, view the student’s work and progress, view the Table of Contents, watch a getting started video, view the orphanage goals, and more in the menu.  Adding a new user is very simple.  You click on add, type their name, click continue and that’s it.  When you need to switch to another child you go to the menu, click on add or change users, and select the child’s name.  When you click on the back button their account with automatically load.  I like their Table of Contents!  If you have not completed all of the chapters you can easily tell which chapter you are working on.  The completed chapters are lit up!  When you view your student’s work it is broken down into the different subjects.  It will tell you how many lessons and jobs that are available and when you expand the subject it will give you the information on how many lessons have been completed and how many jobs were completed correctly and incorrectly.  The progress page is just a brief description of how many total lessons and jobs completed, gold stars earned, pages read, and goals achieved.

The story is 23 chapters and 122 pages long.  Your student will do much more than practicing their reading skills.  They will work on math, science, grammar, vocabulary, thinking skills, character, life skills, and the arts while completing reading the story and completing the activities.  Throughout the chapters there are links that link up to job training and links that expand definitions of vocabulary words.  There is no sound in the app and children who are beginning readers may struggle with any unknown words.

When your student visits Stumptown, they will see eight buildings.  The buildings are Beaver Builders, Brainstormers Inc, Cricket Cards, Woodland Watchers, Pinecone Publishers, Woodland Scurrier, Gopher Gifts and Supplies, and Critter Café.  This is where your student goes to earn their gold stars to buy things for the orphans through the help wanted icons.  Your student can also access the job trainings from here.  The program does not require the student to complete job trainings before answering the questions in help wanted.  However, I highly suggest the student complete job training before answering the help wanted questions because they only get one chance of answering the questions to earn gold stars.  If they answer the question incorrectly, it is marked wrong and the student cannot try again or earn any gold stars.

Sweet Pea enjoyed playing Orphs of the Woodlands at Tangletree.  As a parent, I enjoyed the set up. Star Toaster made it very user friend for both the children and parents.  With not needing sound for anything other than the getting started video the app could be played virtually anywhere.  I look forward to seeing additional adventures that they come out with!

{Review & Giveaway} All Things Bright and Beautiful

Are you looking for a great book to read to your young daughter or granddaughter?  My family had the pleasure of reviewing ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ by Cecil Frances Alexander and Illustrated by Katy Hudson.

Cecil Frances Alexander first published the hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ in 1848.  This hymn is still sung by many churches today.  Katy Hudson brings everything to life with her beautiful illustrations!  When the book first arrived I sat down and flipped through all of the beautiful pages!

In the book, three young children spend a day walking around, enjoying God’s creations, and discovering all of the things that are bright and beautiful.  From the sun, moon and stars to the plants and animals God made them all!

‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ is a 32 page jacketed hardcover book for ages 4-7 and retails for $15.99. Every two page spread is a part of Cecil Frances Alexander’s hymn and Katy’s marvelous artwork.  Sweet Pea enjoyed looking at all of the pages over and over again.  It is a great book to curl up together and read with young children!

About the artist:

Katy Hudson was raised in Middlesbrough, England, and started her career as a small child drawing on freshly painted walls. Her parents quickly encouraged drawing with pencil and paper instead. The idea stuck, and after earning a degree in illustration, Katy is now a freelance illustrator. Katy works at a desk in a studio within Old London Library and likes to tap dance in her spare time.

Propeller Consulting, LLC has provided a prize for me to giveaway to one of my viewers.  Please click the link below to enter for your chance to receive a copy of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’!

{Review} Heirloom Audio Productions ~ Beric The Briton

Beric The Briton Heirloom Audio Productions Review

We have listened to another wonderful audio production by Heirloom Audio Productions called Beric The Briton!  I was thrilled when my family had the opportunity to review this production!  We were first introduced to Heirloom Audio Productions earlier this year when we reviewed ‘The Dragon and the Raven‘.

Beric The Briton Heirloom Audio Productions Review

My family received:

  • Beric The Briton 2 disc set on CD
  • Beric The Briton MP3 Set (Download)
  • Beric The Briton E-Book (PDF Download)
  • Official MP3 Soundtrack (Download)
  • Printable Cast Poster (Download)
  • Study Guide & Discussion (PDF Download)
  • Inspirational Verse Poster (Download)
  • Live the Adventure Letter (Website)
  • Behind the Scene Video (Mp4 Video Download)

The cast of Beric The Briton includes: Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, Robin Hood), Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, Braveheart), Tom Baker (Dr. Who), Honeysuckle Weeks (Foyle’s War), Cathy Sara (Downtown Abbey), and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones).

Beric the Briton is 2 1/2 hours of non-stop adventure for Ages 6 – adult.  The cast brings this wonderful story to life!  While to you are listening you can picture yourself right there in the middle of everything and you will not want to stop listening!  We are brought to the time when Roman invaded Britannia.  During this time Beric and Bodouc are captured and while in custody they first hear of Christus.   Listen along as Beric first hears about our one true God and will Beric and Bodouc lose their lives or will they be set free?

The study guide is well done and is done in color!  Since the guide is in a PDF you can read it from any device or you can choose to print the study guide.  Every page in the guide covers approximately 5-8 minutes of the audio production.  At the top of every page, there is a reference to the time duration, disc number, and track that the page covers.  Having this information is very helpful because it allows everyone to easily find where to begin.  The study guide consists mainly of answering questions, defining words and the occasional “Expand Your Experience!” section with activities including cooking a recipe, reading interesting facts, and expanding your knowledge.  You will never run out of questions to ask in this study guide!  There are ‘Listening Well’ and ‘Thinking Further’ questions.  For most study pages there are at least 10-15 questions, between the two sets of questions, and some have more than 20 questions!   The ‘Listening Well’ questions are basic questions such as “Who greets them when they arrive at the house?” and “Where would Beric like to spend all of his time?”  “Thinking Further’ questions have more then one sentence answers.  They get students thinking, exploring further, and explaining their answers.  Ex: Julius says that Paul “openly teaches that there is only one true King-Christus. And that Nero must bow to Him.”  Is Christ the same sort of king as Nero?  How are their kingdoms very different?  Does Christ conquer by the sword?  How does He rule?  ‘Defining Words’ is a set of vocabulary words that you can have your student define.

Following all of the study questions there is a list of books if you would like to read more about the Britons and Romans in the 1st Century.  Historical Background for Beric the Briton follows.  Three Bible study pages with questions that you need to look up Bible verses to get the answers and a couple pages on ‘The Significance of the Colosseum in Christianity’ finishes up the study guide.  The only thing the study guide does not contain are the answers.

The kids and I listened to Beric the Briton while we were out and about running errands and driving to a couple doctor’s appointments that are a lengthy drive.  I also listened to some of it in the evenings after everyone was in bed.  I thought the entire production from the cast to the music was well done and can be enjoyed over and over.  I enjoyed Beric the Briton and look forward to any future releases from Heirloom Audio Productions!

Crew Disclaimer

Middle of the Month update

I pray that the middle of July finds everyone well!  Not too much going on here.

If you are a homeschool blogger and are interested in reviewing homeschool products the annual application for the Schoolhouse Review Crew will be coming out this fall.  While it is still a couple months away, it will be here before we know it.  I encourage you to keep posting on your blog regularly and continue building your followers.  If you are just still fairly new to the blogging world I encourage you to apply!  Please do not let that discourage you!   Up until last spring, I hadn’t done much blogging or working on a personal website in years.  Then I decided to pick it up again in hopes of joining the crew.  It was one of my dreams to be on the crew one day and I was very excited to get the welcome email!

Being on the crew has been a blessing for our family.  We were on the crew for a great math program.  It was a big hit for all three girls and after the review was done, per the girls request, we continued on with this program.  We are currently reviewing another math program.  Since the review still hasn’t been published I am not going to go into any detail other than it is a favorite with our math lover!  We got to meet a vendor this year at our homeschool convention.  The excitement from our kids when they turned and saw the booth and one of the children yelling, “I know you!  You are on our tv!” was priceless!  I am looking forward to the remainder of this crew year!!  Please keep an eye out for further posts regarding applying to the crew.

If you missed my post yesterday, NotebookingPages.com is having a GIVEAWAY on July 26th followed by a sale on July 27-29, where you will receive $25 off their Lifetime Membership.  There will be a total of 25 winners.  The grand prize winner will receive a Lifetime Membership to NotebookingPages.com along with 12 sponsor gifts.  24 winners will receive a Lifetime Membership to NotebookPages.com.

Should you not be one of the twenty-five winners the Lifetime Membership will be on sale for $25 off following the giveaway.  The current prices is $97 and with the sale discount it will make it $72!!  NotebookingPages.com also offers a payment plan if you need to spread the payments out over a couple of months.   Please stop by and register for the giveaway.  There will be freebies available for everyone.

Please check out the Free Notebooking Pages Product Sampler and the Free Resource Center

I know summertime is the busy time of year for most families, including getting ready for the next school year.  We are looking forward to the activities picking back up in the fall.

Have a very blessed Tuesday!
