{Review} Logic of English – Essentials 2nd Edition

Logic of English Review

My family and I had the wonderful pleasure of reviewing Logic of English Essentials 2nd Edition. We received Volume 1 of Logic of English Essentials 2nd Edition and the Essentials Reader.

Logic of English Review

In Essentials 2nd edition, Logic of English updated their program and divided it into two volumes. According to their website, Logic of English Essentials Volume 2 (Lessons 16-30) will be available in January 2017.  Essentials is for students 7 and older.

What is included in Volume 1 ?

Included in the set are:

  • Essentials Teacher’s Guide, Volume 1
  • Essentials Student Workbook, Volume 1
  • Spelling Journal
  • Morpheme Cards, Set 1
  • Basic Phonogram Flash Cards
  • Spelling Rule Flash Cards
  • Grammar Flash Cards
  • Advanced Phonogram Flash Cards
  • Phonogram Game Cards: Bookface
  • Phonogram Game Cards: Manuscript or Cursive
  • Phonogram Game Tiles
  • Spelling Analysis Card
  • Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference

Teacher’s Guide

The Teacher’s Guide is a huge book!  While a very large book it is teacher friendly, organized, and has everything laid out for you.  Throughout the entire book there are notes in the margins.  They give teacher’s tips, materials needed, optional practice, and other notes.

Every lesson is divided into five days and designed to take 30-45 minutes and you can adjust the schedule to fit the needs of your child(ren).  It is also encouraged to slow the pace down and spend more time on the games and dictation, if you have a struggling student.

There is a placement test on pages 44 – 47.  This test will help determine which level you should follow in the book and also if the pre-lessons are recommended before starting lesson 1.  The levels are designed in such a way that you move interchangeably between the levels when needed and design a custom fit for every individual student that you are teaching.

The Pre-Lessons use Rhythm of Handwriting Manuscript Book or Reason of Handwriting Cursive Book, depending on which you would like your student to use.  I did eventually purchase the Reason of Handwriting Cursive PDF Book for Sweet Pea to use.  We have taught the girls how to write in manuscript as it is what is traditionally taught first.  Logic of English has some excellent points on why cursive should be taught first. I love that Logic of English has multiple sized lines that Sweet Pea can choose from when practicing her handwriting.  When she first saw all of the lines on the page she hesitated until she learned she only had to write on one of the lines and then she eagerly did her handwriting with a smile on her face.

The two handwriting courses are both full courses.  There are four recommended supplements for each of the books (Tactile Cards for cursive or manuscript, Quick Reference for cursive or manuscript, Desk Strip for cursive or manuscript, and a Student Whiteboard).   The handwriting books are very inexpensive.  Each version is $10, per student, for the print copy or $8 for the Single Student/Family License PDF copy.

Here is a copy of their digital policy:

Copyright Notice: Our digital downloads come with a limited reproduction license. Licensed users may use the files on any device or computer and may print them, but may not sell, share, copy, transfer, or distribute files or prints to people not covered by the license.

Single Student/Family License: This digital license is for use by ONE student or the members of ONE immediate family, including parents, children, and grandparents. If you are teaching additional students, you must purchase an additional Single Student/Family License, or purchase the Limited Reproduction Annual Classroom License.

A classroom license is also available.

At the back of the book there are lists with everything taught in the book.   You have a list of Basic Phonograms, Spelling Rules, Advanced Phonograms, List of Morphemes, Grammar – Parts of Speech, Grammar – Sentences and Clauses, Grammar – Punctuation, Index of Spelling Words.  The General Index finishes the book.

Student Workbook

You will need one student workbook per student, as these books are consumable.  The student workbook for volume 1 is 315 pages. You have the choice to perforate the pages or keep them in the book. They are also not hole punched so you have the choice of hole punching them or punching them with the binding of your choice if you choose to take them out of the book.  In the student book there are activities and games, spelling lists and dictation pages.  Some of the pages are specific to the level the student is on so you may not use all of the pages from the student workbook.

Spelling Journal

The Spelling Journal is a neat resource!  Your student will create a Spelling Reference book.  As they learn the sounds and rules they will fill out the information in the journal.  This book will be handy to keep as a resource long after they complete the program!

Flash Cards

The flash cards that came with Logic of English Essentials 2nd edition are: Morpheme Cards Set 1, Basic Phonogram Flash Cards, Spelling Rule Flash Cards, Grammar Flash Cards, Advanced Phonogram Flash Cards, Phonogram Game Cards: Bookface, and Phonogram Game Cards: Manuscript or Cursive.

The flash cards are durable.  They do not need to be laminated but I chose to laminate them for additional durability and protection.  I have five young children and I like to laminate any flash cards that come into our house!  If you choose to laminate the flash cards do be prepared for it to take a few hours of your time.  If they do get mixed (like mine did) they are very easy to sort.  The larger flash cards (Morpheme, Basic Phonogram, Spelling Rules, Grammar, and Advanced Phonogram) each have a different colored strip at the top and which card set they are from.  They also have further identifying information (ie: ‘Rule 10’ and ‘Grammar Card 2’)  The two Phonogram Game Cards (Bookface & Cursive), while not marked which are which, they are printed in two different colors.  Bookface is printed in blue and cursive is printed in green.  If you select manuscript cards instead of cursive cards the manuscript cards are red.

Phonogram Game Tiles

The Phonogram Game Tiles are created similar to game pieces you will find in the majority of board games.  They are used in lessons and also games like Phonogram Bingo.  One of the activities using the Phonogram Game Tiles during a lesson is to use the tiles to write out the spelling words.

Spelling Analysis Card & Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference

The Spelling Analysis Card & Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference are handy tools to have available.  The Spelling Analysis Card is a double sided card about the length of a bookmark and double the width.  It is a reference tool for the teacher with the steps to take when spelling a word.  With the Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference, your student can quickly glance at all of the spelling rules or the phonograms and the reference also has a summary of how to add a suffix to any word.

Essentials Reader

In addition to the Essentials 2nd Edition that Logic of English sent to my family we were also sent PDF copies of The Essentials Reader, Teacher’s Guide: Companion to the Essentials Reader, and Student Activity Book: Companion to the Essentials Reader.  I printed and bound the three books.

As the title of the activity book and teacher’s guide say they are companions to The Essentials Reader.  Combined all three books compliment the Logic of English Essentials 2nd Edition curriculum and are intended to be used with the curriculum.  Every lesson has a passage in the Essentials Reader to read and a few pages of work to do in the activity book, including copying a few sentences in cursive and/or manuscript.  The passages get longer as you progress through the reader and a young reader may need some assistance in reading the passage.  The majority of the pictures in The Essentials Reader are done in color.

The Essentials Reader PDF is $17.60 for a single student/family license (limited classroom license also available).  The Student Activity Book is $9.60 for a single student/family license (annual classroom license also available).

What We Thought

The Teacher’s Guide was a bit overwhelming at first.  It is the size of a high school or college textbook.  Don’t let the 632 pages scare you off!  Be prepared to take some time to look through everything before starting.  I like that there are multiple subjects (Reading, Spelling, Grammar, and Vocabulary) combined into one book.  I found the teacher’s tips and other notes in the margins to be very helpful.  Another added bonus is you can adjust the schedule to accommodate your schedule to fit the needs of your students.  They encourage to slow down the pace if needed!  Another favorite is the multi-level and we can work on the same thing but at the level for each particular student.  Sweet Pea enjoys games and I like that there are a variety of games available for her to play using the flash cards and phonogram tiles.

{Review} FishFlix.com – Agenda 2: Masters of Deceit

FishFlix.com Review

My husband and I received a copy of Agenda 2: Masters of Deceit on DVD from FishFlix.com to review. This is a documentary about what is going on in the United States. This films brings many things to light and a lot to think about. I encourage everyone to watch this documentary!

FishFlix.com Review

Agenda 2 is the sequel to Agenda (also available on FishFlix.com). After the intro to the film, Agenda 2 briefly discusses the first film, Agenda, and the driving force behind both documentaries. Filmmaker Curtis Bowers produced these films after finding out about why America is collapsing from within.

This documentary discusses communism, the promotion of Islam, climate change, Common Core State Standards, economic crisis, terrorism, the manipulation of churches, and the national debt and how it all works together to destroy the United States of America.

“This film will show the issues are simply being used as a smokescreen to hide the purposeful, premeditated, treasonous attacks on the foundations of our freedom.”  – Curtis Bowers

You will hear interviews from Dr. Alan Keyes, Trevor Loudon, Kevin Swanson, Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, Dr. Hormoz Shariat, Jim Simpson, Pastor Joe Schimmel, as well as other people discussing what is going on in America and what has happened in history. Also interviewed are people born and raised in China, Cuba, Soviet Union, and Iran. I liked that the majority of the time when someone spoke (even if they have already spoken) their name appeared on the screen for a few moments, along with who they are (author, former military, filmmaker, founder of an organization, etc.). Music plays in the background the entire of the time.

Agenda 2 is 87 minutes in length and is not rated. Family discrestion is recommended for viewing with children. You know your children the best and when it is best to introduce this information to them. This film does open the opportunity to further discuss what is going on in the country with both your children and others.  After watching Agenda 2: Masters of Deceit I want to purchase and watch Agenda!

{Review} Glimmer Girls & Giveaway

Follow twins Mia & Maddie and their younger sister Lulu on many exciting adventures in the Glimmer Girls series by Natalie Grant.  I had the pleasure of reviewing the first two books in the series, ‘London Art Chase’ and ‘A Dolphin Wish’.

In book #1, ‘London Art Chase’, the family and the girl’s nanny, Miss Julia, travel to London.  While exploring the city with Miss Julia, Maddie witnesses her favorite painting stolen right before her eyes.  They find out that this is not the first time a painting has vanished.  Will the girls be allowed to solve the mystery or will Maddie be disappointed in finding out what happened to the painting?

In book #2, ‘A Dolphin Wish’, we find the family has just left London and are now in San Diego.  After the girl’s adventures in London they need to keep everything low key and not cause any trouble.  When they visit Captain Swashbucker’s Adventure Park one of the twins overhears employees talking about animals getting loose.  They want to solve the question of who is behind this.  Will they figure it out before the have to board the plane for their next flight?

We enjoyed the books!  They are both approximately 200 pages long and are geared towards 9-12 year olds but younger children will also enjoy them.  The chapters are kept short which is perfect for children new to chapter books or reading a chapter as a family before bedtime.  The artwork throughout the book is great!

The author Natalie Grant says:  “Glimmer Girls is a fiction series that I have created with my daughters.  The storyline is about three girls who go on tour with their singing mom.  I have no idea where I came up with that plot!  It’s fun for my little girls to help with the content because they actually live that life.  Glimmer is the last name of the family, but it also has a special meaning.  It is a light that is never extinguished.  Sometimes it may glimmer a little bit brighter, sometimes it may glimmer a little bit dimmer, but it never goes out.  I felt like that was such a perfect description for all of us.  We all have a light on the inside and depending on the day, sometimes it’s bright and sometimes it’s dim.  That is the message I wanted girls to get from this book.  You don’t always have to be shining bright, some days are going to be more difficult than others, but Jesus has put a light in you that will never go out.”

Happy Monday

Happy Monday!

I pray that everyone had an awesome weekend!

I am looking forward to our upcoming reviews!  We have a few reviews beginning to wrap up and those will post soon on the blog.

One of the girl’s favorite review items right now is Read, Write & Type by Talking Fingers.  They are having fun and love to watch the others as they are taking their turns.  Music Appreciation by Zeezok arrived a few days ago and is all ready to begin this week.  The picture below is SweetPea opening the package from Zeezok.

Sweet Pea is excited that her next level of math arrived today (wasn’t supposed to be here until Thursday).  She has a couple more lessons to finish in her current book and I expect her to finish those quickly so she can begin the new level.

We also have a freebie coming up!  Please keep your eyes out for the blog post soon!

Just thought I’d share this photo of SweetPea when she went fishing last week.

Have a blessed week!

Rainforest Journey EdTechLens Review

EdTechLens sent my family one year licenses of Rainforest Journey for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades to review.  EdTechLens has developed a Life Science curriculum for grades K-5.  We used Rainforest Journey on a computer (using Internet Explorer) and an iPad (using Safari).  Both are user friendly!
Rainforest Journey EdTechLens Review

EdTechLens offers licenses for each individual grade and the price varies depending on how many children are accessing the grade.  The options for licenses are 1 individual, up to 5 students, up to 35 students, and up to 100 students.  You will need to purchase a license for each individual grade that you plan to use and select the number of students who are using that grade.  This program is great for homeschoolers, schools, and co-ops.

There is a teacher portal for the teacher (Parent in the case of a homeschool family using the program.) to track all of your students.  It is very easy to set up and even if you have a large family or class it shouldn’t take you a long time to set up each student’s account.  You will know how many times the student logs in, their progression, and quiz scores.  I really like the progression meter because it gives detail down to the individual chapter that has been completed.  If it hasn’t been complete then the meter is red and once completed it is green.  Hovering over the meter will identify which section it is whether it is the chapter, a lesson, an assessment, etc.  When clicked, it will scroll down an show how much of the, chapter, lesson, vocab, etc has been completed and the assessment scores.

The teacher can access all of the class material for his/her student(s) from this portal.    The answers to the assessments are available in the Teacher’s Resources along with a lesson plan sample, hands-on activities, and other resources.  For those who need this information, at the bottom of every lesson page in the teacher portal the science standards that have been met for NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and New York State Learning Standards Core Curriculum and the Lexile Measures are listed, as well as the word counts for passages.  They are marked with circles with the letters ‘S’, ‘L’, and ‘W’ and when clicked on their boxes will expand.  Another option available is the choice for the program to be guided, where everything is done sequentially or open which allows the child to make his/her own choice of what to do.  I chose the open mode for my girls.

There are 5 units in Grade 1 and they are:

Unit 1: The Big Picture of the Rainforest
Unit 2: Adapt or Die!
Unit 3: Animals
Unit 4: Plants and Fungi
Unit 5: Ecosystems

In every unit there are a series of lessons, vocab, illustrations, and assessments.  The students can also access the progress bar so they know where they are in the program and can see if they missed something.  In the lessons EdTechLens uses beautiful, vibrant, colorful photos.  My girls loved the photos!  You can easily navigate back and forth between lessons.  They also offer PDF pages of each lesson that you can print.  A feature that I love is there is an option for passages to be read to the student!  This is beneficial if you have a non-reader, beginning reader, or a struggling reader.  They can read along with the speaker word by word.  The vocab lists are very short for every lesson.  There are a few words along with their definition on the vocab page.  An option to print the vocab list via PDF is available.  Any of the illustrations shown in the lesson are available on the illustrations page as well as available on PDF.  One thing that we didn’t use but are available were the assessments.  There are three assessments options to choose from; Depth of Knowledge, Open Ended Assessment, and Factual Assessment.  You can choose to have your student complete 1, 2 or all 3 of these assessments.  There are multiple choice and essay questions.  In both the guided and open modes these assessments are required to be answered before moving on, unless you have turned them off.  In the teacher mode go to ‘Course Outline’ on the left and you will see the units show up on the right.  Expand each unit and unselect which assessments you do not wish to use.  The setup for Grade 2 and Kindergarten are the same as Grade 1.

I noticed that my girls liked to sit by each other and work on the lesson together.   As I mentioned earlier they loved looking at pictures of all of the animals.  They enjoyed being able to listen to the lesson as it was being read to them by the narrator and preferred this over me reading the lesson to them.  The girls liked to be able to use the program independently.  They were giggling in hysterics quite a few times when they thought that something was funny, like an expression an animal was making or something about the picture that found to be silly.

{Review} Demme Learning’s Math-U-See

Demme Learning Math U See ReviewDemme Learning blessed my family with the Primer Universal Set of Math-U-See for us to use in the review as we have not used Math-U-See before. The universal set includes an instruction DVD, teacher’s manual, one student workbook, integer block kit, and a 12 months access to their new Primer Digital Pack. My family purchased two additional student workbooks so all three of our girls could do Primer together.

Demme Learning Math U See Review

Math-U-See doesn’t go by grades but instead levels.  Their levels are:

Demme Learning Math U See Review

Digital packs are offered for all levels!  The Primer Digital Pack includes 12-month access to Primer streaming instruction videos, Instruction Manual PDF, Lesson Solutions, Skip Count Songs MP3s and Songbook PDFs, and Digital Manipulatives.  You can access all of these files on a browser of your choice.  The digital pack also gives you access to the Math-U-See Digital Manipulatives but you must use Chrome or Safari browsers to use these digital manipulatives.  If you prefer having the teacher manual and lessons on DVD as well, the digital packs can be purchased as part of the universal or level-up sets. They are NOT included in the instruction set.  You can also purchase a 12 month subscription separately if your student needs additional time to finish the level or already have the materials.

I love being able to watch the lessons from any device.  It allows us to take Math-U-See anywhere we go!  We are not tied to a room with a television and DVD player to watch the lessons. One day we took our school work with us to the park!  All you need is your device to watch the lesson and use the digital manipulatives and the student workbook and you can do your work anywhere!

The digital maniuplatives are very nice!  Sweet Pea loves using the digital blocks.  She has been practicing what she has done in Math-U-See Primer.  We haven’t used the other features beyond the maniuplatives on the board but there is the ability to work on fractions, decimals, and algebra with the board as well.  There is also the ability to write notes, zoom in & out, and lock the background!  There are a few background options including Decimal Street.  When your student is ready to work on another problem erasing the board is easy with the garbage can in the upper right hand corner.  If you have any questions about what the buttons are on the board there is a question mark that you can click and it will tell what everything is!

MUS-Digital2 (1)

Usually we do math at the same time and I have the girls rotate who is doing what. Sweet Pea will watch the video while Peanut and Lil’ Bit finish up any worksheets from their prior lesson. Sweet Pea goes on to her workbook pages while Lil’ Bit and Peanut take turns watching their lesson. I check their worksheets as they go and have them make any corrections that are needed.

My oldest, Sweet Pea, is flying through the lessons and only has a few more lessons to go before she is done with the Primer Level.  I expected her to go through the lessons quickly as we wanted her to do Primer Level as a review.  She is loving Math-U-See!  I can hand her the phone or laptop and let her watch the lesson online and when she is finished watching it she takes the worksheets for the lesson and completes them with ease.  One night she wanted to use the Math-U-See Digital Manipulatives in her free time.  When it was time for bed, her dad told her it was bed time and she needed to put the tablet up.  She didn’t want to and he said you are playing and it is time to go to bed.  She said, “No, Daddy, I am not playing I am doing school.”

Peanut and Lil’ Bit are going at a much slower pace.  We have been covering 1-2 lessons a week.  They are only 5 & 6 and they prefer the physical blocks over the digital blocks.

Math-U-See has been such a hit with our girls that we will be continuing to Alpha when they are through with Primer.
