Trip to a preserve

Here are photos from our recent trip to a preserve.  It is the first time that I took the kids here and they had fun!

Have a blessed day!

{Review} HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections

Are  you looking for something fun to do with your children to teach them about U.S. elections?  Are you wanting to create a lifelong project that your children can come back to time and time again?  I received HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections  download from Home School in the Woods to review with my family.  This product is also available on CD.

U.S. Elections History Lap-Pak Review

This is our first time using a lap-pak from Home School in the Woods and it is amazing!!  If you have never made a lap book before this is a very good one to start with.  Home School in the Woods has laid everything out for you!  You are given step by step directions throughout the entire process from the beginning until the finished product.  Detailed pictures of every step from filling out the pages to assembling in the lap book!  The suggested grades to work on this lap-pak are grades 3-8 but you can use it with older and younger children as well.  I used this with Sweet Pea who will be eight soon.

I appreciate that the majority of the supplies needed to complete this lap-pak can be found around the house and are inexpensive if any needed to be purchased.  The project directions are broken down into detailed steps.  Each step lists the supplies you need, which paper to print the pieces on, and step by step directions on completing the individual project.  Pictures are also included for assembling the project.  It made it very easy for me to print everything on the proper paper, what supplies I needed for each project, and how everything was assembled.

Included in the lap-pack is a 24 page reading booklet.  The reading text can be printed in two different ways, either in booklet or binder format.  If printed in booklet format, the completed size is 5.5″ x 8.5″ and in the binder format the pages will be 8.5″x 11″.  Step by step instructions are given for printing the reading text.  If your printer doesn’t have the duplex feature there are instructions on which pages are printed together to form the book.

*Note: If you have any problems with page placement when printing in duplex mode make sure “Flip on Right Edge” is selected.

An audio copy of the booklet is provided as 2 MP3 files.  Home School in the Woods provides the location of every project on the track so you can easily find the audio reading for the project you are working on.  I like the option of having an audio file available as an alternative to reading the booklet.

There are a few different options of putting together the lap book.  Home School in the Woods provided detailed descriptions on how to put together the lap book and where to place everything in the lap book.  We chose to assemble the pages in a book with comb binding per Sweet Pea’s request.  We have a comb binder, which she loves to use and we used colored card stock for the pages.  Sweet Pea chose the fall colors for her card stock.  Other ways of putting the book together is using a binder to store all of the pages or in a lap book (as shown in their directions).

As we were putting together the lap book Sweet Pea kept exclaiming, “Mom, this is awesome!” and “I love this!”  I was very excited to see how excited she was as she was putting together this lap book.  She has asked for me to read her the pages in the book and asks to look through it a lot.  This will definitely something we will be keeping for a long time!

Here are some photos from Home School in the Woods of the completed lap book, using file folders.

New Friends

Being on the Crew I have been able to meet other homeschool bloggers.  Some are new to the Crew, like myself, and others are veterans.  We are all at various stages of our homeschool journey and may or may not homeschool all of the children in the house (only have to homeschool at least one child).  Over the course of the next few months,  I have decided to share their blogs.   Please visit the blogs and leave these other homeschool moms some love!

Happy Friday!

Wow!  It is hard to believe we are in the middle of February!  I pray that everyone had an awesome week!

This week during their writing warm-ups one of my kids was asking help spelling a word and there were two l’s next to each other in the word and the child exclaims, “It has LL just like in Spanish!”  The picture below is two of my girls working on writing.

This week I, along with other homeschool bloggers, received a nice package from Logic of English for an upcoming review.  WOW!  I received Essentials Vol. 1 and will be reviewing it with Sweet Pea.  I also received the Essentials Reader PDF supplement.  I have printed everything digitally that I have received and am working on binding everything.  Picture below is the Essentials Reader that I bound.

Sweet Pea is learning how to use the Math U See blocks.  Math U See is another review on our family’s schedule!  So far Sweet Pea is enjoying it and the other two will be beginning next week, when their student books arrive.

For the Amazing Race fans out there the new season began tonight!  It looks like it will be a fun season.  All of the teams have at least one person on the team that have a YouTube Channel.  They started off the season a bit interesting with all teams flying to Mexico City from different cities in the US.  If you missed tonight’s show CBS should be posting it to their website at some point tomorrow.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

{Review} Beyond the Silence

One of my favorite things to do is read books.  I have been given an opportunity to read and review ‘Beyond the Silence’ by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse. {Aff link}  I was hooked right from the beginning didn’t want to put the book down.  If you are looking for a great book to read this is one!

The book is about a young women, Lillian, who decides to accept a job across the country and leave the only house and family she knows.  When Lillian arrives to her new city she hears rumors about her new employer.  Nearly everyone is certain that her new employer got away with killing his wife.  His son hasn’t spoken since the horrific crime.  Then when the housekeeper is brutally attacked and left for dead people are certain it was Jimmy’s dad who committed both acts of violence.

The authors reveal the killer early on and the reason behind Jimmy’s silence.  Read the captivating story and find out if Jimmy’s father committed the awful crime or if there is a killer on the loose.

I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts and opinions on the book are my own.  I do have affiliate links on this page.

Happy Monday!

I pray that everyone had a great weekend!

We had a wonderful weekend!

The park by my parents house opened up this weekend, after being closed for renovations, and the city had a grand re-opening ceremony on Saturday.  We spent a few hours there.  The two youngest enjoyed the splash pad while the older three spent the majority of the time on the playground.  I will be sharing some pictures soon so please check back for pictures!

We have a few busy months coming up!  It is our birthday season!  January through April are busy months for our family!  My husband and 4 of our 5 kids were born within a 7 week period and our anniversary is right in the middle!   We also have lots of grandparents, uncle, aunts, and cousins birthdays & anniversaries during these few months.

Our new school year is in full swing.  The girls absolutely love their Spanish and even the two youngest will participate.  Here is my first review of ‘La Clase Divertida‘ and I will have an update soon!  The girls love it and I am finding that I sing the songs at random times of the day!  They love ‘Ziggy School’ (All About Reading).  Sweet Pea loves math and writing and the other two not so much. 🙂

We have some new curriculum and other fun things to review courtesy of the Homeschool Review Crew!  We are reviewing Here to Help Learning!  I met the Mora’s at our local homeschool convention in 2014!  Wonderful family and a wonderful company!   Late today we received The Faith Builders Bible from Zonderkidz.  The kids will get to open the package in the morning.  I know they will be excited when they open it.  ‘The Dragon and The Raven‘ audio theater by Heirloom Audio Productions is another favorite with a stunning study guide!

Have a very blessed week!
