New Tradition – Part Three

How was everyone’s Christmas?

I have a confession!  We didn’t finish unwrapping all of the books.  We missed a couple of nights due to late nights out of the house and then one night became two, and then three.  They are still sitting on our bookshelves waiting to be unwrapped.  We did find one more book in the pile that was not Biblical.  I mentioned in another post that ‘The Florida Gators Night Before Christmas’ was the only book not based from the Bible, sadly I am mistaken and we read a few pages and then put the book up.  I know I will be criticized by many but this book was not supposed to be wrapped with the others (neither was the other book).   I will unwrap and read the remaining books with the children and post a full list of our books with links.

Here are some photos of the kids with the books they selected.

Loss of a friend

When I found Tapestry of Grace about 6 years ago I didn’t expect to gain the friendships that I have.  Before I joined the group some of the members began a Secret Sisters ornament exchange group where every December those who wish to participate are assigned a secret sister to pray for and send an ornament.  The Secret Sister group is more than just that month time frame of filling out the application, waiting for and receiving our assignments, praying for our secret sister and her request(s), and sending the package, with the revelation.  We talk throughout the year, sharing things going on in our lives, asking for prayers, and the famous annual Super Meet.  We laugh, cry, celebrate, and mourn with each other.  Even when the Lord moves one of us on to other curriculum, graduates the last child, or even placing the child/children into a public or private school we are always welcomed to stay in this group.  This group is so very special!!

Last week we lost one of our own.  One of our beautiful friends fell ill and lost her life.  She was a mom with three beautiful children!  It still doesn’t feel real and I am still at a loss for words.  My Facebook feed has been filled with wonderful memories of her shared by people that she has touched.  When I go to her page it is full as well.  She was a beautiful person inside and out!  She will be missed!

Have a blessed week!

New Tradition – Part Two

Our new tradition is still a big hit with our kids and they make sure we open another book every night.  I spoke about our new tradition in a prior post.  We opened our 11th and 12th books tonight.  We didn’t have the opportunity to open a book together last night due to our schedules.  The kids didn’t seem to mind opening up two books tonight instead.

Here is the full list of the books we have opened so far:

  1. A Star So Bright: A Christmas Tale by M. Christina Butler
  2. Adam and Eve in the Garden (Adán y Eva en el jardín) by Zondervan
  3. The Story of Jesus for Young Children retold by Heather Amery
  4. The Drummer Boy by Ted Dekker
  5. The Berenstain Bears’ Old-Fashioned Christmas by Jan & Mike Berenstain
  6. Lift-and-Learn Old Testament Stories by Allia Zobel Nolan
  7. David and the Giant (David y el gigante) by Zondervan
  8. Queen Esther Helps God’s People (La reina Ester ayuda al pueblo de Dios) by Zondervan
  9. Daniel and the Lions (Daniel y los leones) by Zondervan
  10. Jesus and His Friends (Jesús y sus amigos) by Zondervan
  11. A Child is Born from the Gospel According to St. Luke*
  12. The Florida Gators Night Before Christmas by V.J. Jackson**

*Note: I just wanted to mention that I did NOT pay $67.99 + $4.99 shipping on Amazon for ‘A Child is Born from the Gospel According to St. Luke’.  I bought it for $3.97 at Books-A-Million in their bargain section.  At the time I am writing this post I could not find a listing on http://www.bamm.com or a cheaper price on Amazon.

**Note: The Florida Gators Night Before Christmas is the only book of all of the books wrapped that is not from the Bible and I didn’t realize the book got wrapped until it was opened this evening.  My kids know that we don’t do Santa and Santa Claus doesn’t exist.  The book talks about Santa pulling a sleigh with alligators (named after coaches and players) bringing sports memorabilia to someone on campus.  This book is also a exclusive to Books-A-Million and is not listed on their website.  I found it in the Christmas section of their store.

What traditions do you do in your house?  Have you started any new traditions?  I would love to hear the favorite traditions in your house!

Have a Blessed Day!

New Tradition

This year we are starting a new tradition.  I found a book a day countdown to Christmas on Pinterest.  Take 24 or 25 books, depending on if you want your last book to be read on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and wrap them up.  You unwrap one a day and read them together as a family.

My goal was to find 24 + books that have Jesus’ birth in them.  I was able to get about half and so I chose some of our other books that focus on events that occurred in the Bible.  I will continue gathering more as I come across them to grow our library.

I chose a plain blue and white Merry Christmas wrapping paper to wrap the books.

We are opening one a night and every night a different child is choosing the book from the pile and they get to unwrap the book.  We are going from youngest to oldest.

The books opened so far:

The above links are NOT affiliate links.  I am just sharing where you can find them.

The kids are enjoying getting to select the book of the night and reading together as a family.

Have a blessed day!
